Motivation Please

Crew,

I think I need some motivation. In the last week, I've done 1 spinning class, one 3.4 mile run, and swam 1700 yds. that in and of itself doesn't sound so bad, however, those are also my totals for November. Had a strong October. Averaged 4-5 workouts a week, but then had some injury issues which required me to take about 2 weeks off, and a holiday so November pretty much was a bust.

I put together a plan that would get me to running 26 miles by mid June, and that plan calls for me to do a 7 mile run this weekend, which scares me.

Help.

BG

This is nice. Tracy just came over here and read what I wrote, and she is laughing in my face. She thinks I'm a pile, doubts my injuries, and thinks that i'm a 50/50 DNF at this point. What an awesome cheerleader. So, I need you guys.

Guys – (This is Tracy) I think the lack of motivation comes from the 2-beer a night pilsner habit that Bryan leisurely drinks in his gray sweatpants, white T-shirt and black socks. Lance Armstrong? Not so much... I have the utmost belief that he will finish the race, and I will be there to cheer him on every step of the way. I really am a nice person at heart. :) (p.s. - I laugh about the injuries, because this is the first I have heard of these mysterious ailments - hmm

Fellas - BG again - Nice. Very nice. Help.

Ok, I just typed a long message that I lost so will be brief as I have a meeting in 13 minutes.

BMG - I understand why you want to do it but would caution you to think long and hard. I have run 7 marathons and gotten hurt training for all but 2. When training for IMCA I was very concerned I was not marathon ready but trusted my coach - essentially a marathon in an IM just kind of falls out of the other training. It was weird but happened and I never felt as beat up (for IMCA) as I do for marathons. Atom - what are your thoughts? You can provide good perspective with a very nice 1/2 IM and marathon showing - how would you compare the training for each? Jack/Slim I think you will agree on the pounding marathon training imparts.

Everything I read says right now = no structure. I am really trying to adhere. My singular goal between now and 1/1 is to be 100% healthy and mentally fresh. I just went swimming - after 400 yards I felt a twinge in my left shoulder - and injury I have had in the past - I got out of the pool and went back to my cage. I mean cube.

I totally get why you want to do it and think from a confidence perspective it could help a lot but really don't think you need it. Maybe a 1/2 marathon that you brick?

If you are going to do it I agree with Jack: you can add more than 5% each week, don't need to go 26, and should never do two 20+ in a row. I have only gone 24 one time and have never gone 25 or 26. Also agree with the periodization 3 build 1 recover. And I would drop the speed part altogether (would not if you weren't doing IM but the risk is WAY too high that you will get hurt).

Sorry to rant. Last thing I will say and I may have said it before. My brother (who has run 10+ marathons) said to his coach (who is an all world IM) "I am thinking of doing Grandma's as part of my base training." His coaches response "That is great. Find another coach."

I think you need to hit a marathon before your training starts or let it go. Marathon training is for the birds and I love to run. It's way to hard on the body- the bike and pool make you a better runner but running does not pay the same returns.

I do think it is important to get over any mental hurddles before you get too deep into training... so go run a marathon before march, seriously.

We all have a bit of baggage we're bring to the table. But we also owe it to ourselves and the group to start chopping away.

Too harsh?

To follow up to the last e-mail. Here is a link to all the marathons http://www.marathonguide.com and a link to the guide that got me through my first- http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/inter1.html.

I'll come cheer you on since it will be in march and somewhere warm- you can count on me to run with you as well- not the whole way though

Marathon Schmarathon. Dude, MentalMan Madison is just that, all mental.

I'm picturing the Gilby I saw at the pool before the Chain of Lakes Sprint Triathlon the first time we did it. You remember, the guy pointing at people and calling them out, "I'm going to beat you, and I'm going to beat you, and, I will for sure smoke you." The guy who had to try on his tri gear the night before the race to show us how jacked he was to kick some multi-sport tail.

You don't need any motivation, you're The Gilbs, and you're money.

Now carry on with your bad self.

You guys are awesome. Seriously, thanks for all the input / pump ups. This is why we have this blog. Very cool.

Ace - definately not too harsh. I appreciate the perspective. I will take a look at the schedule and see if anything pops.

Cronz - great thoughts. Are you starting your training on 1/1?

Slim - you're the man. I do remember that, and you are right. I am the Gilbs.

I haven't had any internet access the past few days, so here are my few cents.

1. We are all grown men and can do what you want when it comes to training, but personally, I would rethink long and hard whether you want to shoot for a marathon in June. As Adam told me recently, "When I get to 18 miles, it hurt, not just tired, but hurt". Which is true. Needless to say you will probably hit around20 in training, but trying to hit 26 right when your training is just getting to be long and hard enough seems to be counterintuitive to me. If you wanted to shoot for a March/April marathon, just to prove yourself that you could do it, that may make sense. But I think your timing may screw up your training and may result in burnout/injury.

2. Your having what we all have at this time of year, which is the winter doldrums. The goal is too far off to kick us into gear. Chris is right, just use this time to be healthy, work on some things that you want to improve on, get some base training in, or maybe some cross training (do something else as long as your body is moving). Ice skate, cc ski, play basketball, something just to mix it up. For the trainer, go get a spinervals DVD or try intervals. for the run, the biggest obstacle is getting out the door. If you can get outside, you will go. Its easier said than done. And you are the Gilbs.

3. Had a good night in Vegas last night by using the Costanza method. find 3 games which I had a strong instinct for, and bet against that instinct. Will try again tonight.
