Self Coached, Self Delusional?

I like to think of myself as a do-it-yourselfer. When there's a project to do, I do it, right after my Dad shows me how.

My Dad doesn't do Triathlon.

So....what are people doing for training plans? I know some of us are considering coaches, local or online. Right now I'm leaning towards buying a customized online plan. (Ouch, try typing that phrase with a straight face knowing your marketing/ad buddies are reading it.) Anyway, plan on me looking to beg, borrow and steal your good workouts. I hate that feeling of wondering if you're doing things, "right."

Every once in a while I'll be in the pool doing a few laps and I'll look around and see kids on waterslides, and seniors doing water aerobics, and teenaged lifeguards flirting with each other, and who the hell knows what that guy is doing, and I just feel like Hunter Kemper's workouts probably aren't like this. Maybe, but probably not.

Are we looking at 20 weeks out to start actual programs? Given there will be significant off program training.

On a side note- I've been thinking about my core a lot. One of the things for the Timberman was that I felt in shape but not strong. Anyone have thoughts on this?

I will probably start with a coach in March. On the core front - there is a ton of crap out there and pretty much all of it says it is absolutely necessary.

But I never get around to doing it.

On the DIY issue - I am a big fan of a coach for a number of reasons, foremost accountability. Kind of lame as a 30 something with a job and kids but it is what it is. I have been kicking around who to work with - had thought about the guy in St. Paul a bit but in retrospect may go back to John.

Here is what one coach sent me.

The options depend on a few things.

1. When you want to start your training towards Wisconsin
2. How much time do you have to train over the winter vs. early summer and
next year.
3. Budget

If you want to start training now your program would ideally focus on
cycling this fall, running in the winter, and a full on three sport focus
early spring.
I don't like to get folks started more than 20 weeks out from there "A" race
on an Iron program as it is quite intensive and too long of a buildup.
Rather the season starts out with some "B" priority races and gradually
builds to a peak later next summer.

Here are some options for you

-Online Program via workout log / coaching contact via email and phone with
4hrs 1 x 1 coaching/mo. (Hours can carry over if not used.)
$860 / mo

-Online Program via workout log / coaching contact via email and phone with
2 hrs 1 x 1 coaching/mo.
$640 / mo

-Online program via workout log / coaching contact via email and phone with
1 x 1 a la carte.
$400 / mo

...at some point I would also recommend a Lactate Threshold Testing/VO2 Max
Testing @ $300 (Once early in the base phase next year and again closer to
your race) I can explain this test in more detail if you would like.
Essentially, it is a measurement of your current fitness and calculates your
heart rate zones which are critical to you training plans.

The Gilbs' training plan is DIY - I'm doing a ton of searching online, in mag's, and I will probably adapt to whatever you all are doing. Possibly rip off whatever someone is doing if I think it works. The option of a coach for me is really not realistic, unless I find someone that would look at getting paid less than $100 a month. So, fellas, maybe I'll just pay you all $25 a month and you 4 can coach me.

Pretty much this fall, I think that I'm going to focus on consistency and base. I'm really enjoying bike rides in the 35-45 mile range lately, but at lower speeds (avg = 17-18mph). Like I say, more base than anything else. I really also want to get a good run base in late fall and into early '08.

I found this one training program that looks pretty good that gets you to finishing your first Ironman in 20 weeks, but it assumes that you are already training in the neighborhood of 6-8 hours a week (http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=441). So recently, my focus has been on getting my training up so that I'm training 8-10 hours per week by marchish. 2 weeks ago, I had total training time of 5:30, but last week, I only had 3:30, so I'm up and down.
