it is off to DC. This ironman deal is going to be hard, but it is even going to be harder without the support of CC, Slim, and the Gilbs. But we will keep on truckin and see what we come up with.
I know that it is still hard for some of you to understand why am I doing this. And there have been points in the past month I have wondered the same thing. But, my reasoning is this. One, this is the only point in my life where I can still make a move and not be super hard on the family. Two, even if you grew up in Des Moines, you don't stay with the Iowa Cubs if Chicago is calling you up. And 3, it helps me figure out if what I have career wise in MN is how I want to spend the next 20 years. I know that you guys out there that change companies out there don't understand why I don't just jump to the private sector. But the government is like the death star, once your in its gravitational pull, your in for life.
Gilbs, get better guy. We have all thought alot about you over the past month. Have faith that things will get better. We all just wish we were in that bar that night and could have done or seen something. Luckily, you married up, have two great girls, and a wonderful support network to help you get through this.
Last of all, although all of you are not democrats, I encourage you to vote Obama this fall. Raises under the current regime have not been great, and I need the money to put a solid roof over Kate and Fischer's heads with the cost of housing in DC.
And if your in the DC area, or have interest in checking out the nation's capitol, please don't hesitate to call. Everybody is always welcome.

JPK - I will miss you but am glad you are doing this. I'm sure it will be hard but worth it.
Atmosphere has a song about MPLS that says something like "Roam if you must...but when you've seen enough...come home." Makes sense - maybe we can do a 1:1 East Coast swap...Crandall....?
Lastly - 20 years? I thought you were retiring at 40?
JPK, I totally applaud your effort at branching out to the DC area. Very cool idea. I know we'll see you again, so it is not a big deal to this guy. We will miss you at saturday morning rides and SPMHH, but I know you'll be back lots, and in a couple of years maybe for good. I think I'm the last all-MN Chubby. Pretty much everyone else has done a stint out somewhere else. In a way, I wish I would have done that myself. So, I say good for you.
Thanks for the kind words about me as well. I know you guys would have been there for me that night. And you're right about getting through this, Tracy and everyone else has been great. It has made me look at things quite a bit differently as you can probably imagine - i.e. who are really your friends, what is really important to you, how you really want to spend your free time, how sometimes people take things for granted, etc. Oddly enough, I've come to peace with my situation, and have accepted it. Now I'm just focusing on getting better, and within a year, returning to normal life. Sometimes it is still tough, but when I start circling the drain, I think about you guys, and my family and Tracy and the girls, and realize I've got a pretty damn good life, and have been very lucky thus far. I'll be back. It's the Gilbs.
On the fence on Obama / Hillary. Have always been a Hillary person, but now I'm starting to lean towards Obama. I like how he's handled himself under the election pressure. Can't really say the same about Hillary. I'll have to read a few more things, and watch a few more debates.
